Flight
Instruction
Roy Farris ~ CFI I
grew up with flying. My father had airplanes all the time when I was growing up,
so airplanes and airports were just a natural thing for me. I began taking
flying lessons when I was fourteen years old, and received my Private Pilot
license at age sixteen. The normal teenage interests like cars and girls took
over, and although I continued to fly, I didn't build many hours over the next
twenty five years. I always wanted to teach, so I went back for additional
training and received my Instrument, Commercial and Flight Instructor rating in
just over a year. I began teaching immediately and found that I did indeed love
it. During this time I also experienced a job upset and was able to build
several hours flying an observation route from central Illinois to Chicago
looking for oils leaks on a large underground oil pipeline. I also engaged in
many hours of aerobatic flight training at Vincennes University flying a
Citabria Decathlon. I have taken additional training in basic formation flying,
and unusual attitude recovery. During my time as a flight instructor, I
have put many new student pilots through their training, and have a 100% success
rate. All of my former students remain active and we get together often for
recurrent training and for just plain fun.
I am very active in the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and
I am currently building a Thorp T-18 (Pictured Left). I own and operate a
website devoted to the T-18 and have been the Newsletter Editor for the T-18
Mutual Aid Society for the last seven years. For more information about the T-18
please see the listing in the "Aviation Links" section on this
website. I also belong to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), and
to The Sport Aircraft Association (SAA).
I currently have about 1500 hours total time
with about 850 hours of Primary Flight Instruction. I have time in several
different airplanes which include, Piper Cherokee 140, Cherokee 180, Cherokee
Warrior, Cherokee Archer, Cherokee Arrow, Cherokee Turbo Arrow, Grumman Tiger,
Citabria Decathlon, Champ, Cessna 140A, Cessna 150, 152, Taylorcraft BC-12D, and
many hours in the Thorp T-18.
I love to fly and to teach others about the truly wonderful world
of Aviation. I teach part time at Franklin Flying Field and am always available
on weekends, and on weekday evenings. I am available for ground school
instruction and am always happy to give Bi-Annual Flight Reviews. For information or scheduling
